Writing Action Plan

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, this book is for you!
  1. Do you want a writing program that is easy to follow and easy to teach?
  2. Do you want to feel confident as a writing teacher and be confident that you will produce strong writers?
  3. Do you want a writing program that you can teach to all your students from different grade levels simultaneously?
  4. Do you want a writing program that helps you organize writing lessons from several different curriculums into one clear program?
  5. Do you want a program that will help your child be completely prepared for the SAT or other college writing exams as well as college itself?

Yes! I want a writing plan that is easy to follow and easy to teach.

Because writing can be such a complicated subject to teach, many home school teachers just want a curriculum that presents writing in a clear, uncomplicated fashion.  This is why we’ve broken this book into three parts:

Part I – Summary of the Steps: We will begin with a summary of each step.  The summaries of the steps are listed on a few pages.  This will help you know, at all times, where you should be, where you are headed, and where each step fits into the big picture of your child’s writing.

Part II – Pacing Charts:  Part 2 gives you sample pacing charts that will help you decide where and when to begin and how much time to spend on each activity.  If you are beginning this program with an elementary school student, you will see how to slowly build you child’s writing skills over time.  If you are beginning this program with a high school student, you will be shown how to quickly, but effectively, deliver the same information.

Part III – The Road Map: Part 3 will show you how to implement each step and give you strategies to help reinforce the writing concepts.  However, this section will not give you specific lesson plans.  While Parts 1 and 2 tell you what to teach and when to teach it, this section points out key aspects of each section and provides sample worksheets and lesson plans.  One of the greatest advantages of this section is that it will point you to high quality and low cost lesson plans for each step.  Even better, it will show you how to make sense out of writing instruction using your existing curriculum.

Yes!  I want to feel confident as a writing teacher and be confident that I will help produce strong writers.

Whether you are comfortable with your writing skills or not, you want a writing program that gives you confidence that your students will be successful.  A great feature to this program is that it teaches you, the home school teacher, right along with your children.  It will guide you step-by-step as you cover every aspect of writing.  The Home School Writing Action Plan is that first step.

What makes this program so powerful is that it starts with one simple writing technique and builds.  Before you know it, you and your students will be writing amazing paragraphs, essays, stories, and reports.  You won’t believe how easy it is to teach, and you’ll be amazed at how far your child can go.  Even the reluctant writers thrive with this program.

Yes!  I want a writing program that I can teach to all my children at the same time.

The goal of this program is to give home school parents a single writing program that can be used with multiple grade levels simultaneously.   This system is so easy to manage that you can have several children at different stages or have them all at the same stage.

Example:  You have a 3rd grader just learning the paragraph and a fifth grader learning the five paragraph essay.  There is a simple writing technique that both the 3rd and 5th grader will use for both of these tasks.  Begin by teaching the 3rd grader the paragraph and have the 5th grader join in as a review.  When the 3rd grader is ready to practice paragraph writing, you can show your fifth grader the next step of essay writing.  An hour later, both of your students will be using the exact same method for prewriting, only the 5th grader will be covering the topic in more detail.

*Note: This book will show you how to teach this, but does not give the specific lesson plan.  You can purchase our resource for teaching the paragraph and five paragraph essay or feel free to use other curriculum.

Yes!  I want a system that allows me to incorporate lessons I like from my current writing curriculum into a clear, organized writing program.

This book is a road map.  It will show you where to begin your journey of writing instruction.  You can choose to use our curriculum, or you are free to use any other program you may have already acquired.

For example, the first step is to write the paragraph. We’ll point you toward our curriculum How To Teach the Paragraph, tell you it’s price $7.99, and show you ideas to help reinforce this skill until your child has mastered it.
However, you may already have a plan for teaching the paragraph. You are free to save the $7.99 and use your own curriculum. However, we highly recommend ours. You will see very quickly how we’ve made this program so easy to teach.

The added benefit to this program is that you and your child will have such a grasp of writing that you will be able to apply any other writing program into this system.  If you currently have a terrific descriptive writing program, super!  This book will show you where it fits into the overall program.  Furthermore, when you complete the Writing Assessment steps of the program, your children will see very clearly how those descriptive writing lessons improved their writing.

Yes!  I want a writing program that will help my reluctant writers gain confidence.

One of the most common questions I get at my home school workshops is: “My child hates to write.  Every assignment is a battle.  How can I get him to write?”

More than twenty years of teaching has taught me that children never want to do something they aren’t confident doing.  It makes sense.  How much does anyone want to do anything that they have no confidence in doing?

There’s good and bad news for this.  The bad news is that this book may not help you make your students love writing.  The good news is that it makes writing so easy that eventually, they will have confidence.  This may be enough to get them to write, even if they don’t like it.

I’ve taught in very difficult neighborhoods with classrooms filled with students who hated writing.  When I begin with these students I make them a deal that goes something like this:

“Would you give me your best effort for a few weeks if I could help you do the following:

  1. Show you how to start and finish any writing assignment very quickly.  This includes book reports, essays, research reports and more.
  2. You’ll KNOW that when you finish it will be, at the very least, pretty good.
  3. You’ll have these writing skills for the rest of your school career.”

You would be amazed at the buy-in I get from even the most reluctant writers.

Yes!  I want a program that will prepare my child for success on the SAT/ACT college writing exam and will help them be well prepared for college itself.

If your students need to take a college entrance exam, there’s a good chance they will be required to write a timed essay.  Typically, students have 25 minutes to organize their ideas and write an essay.  The essay becomes a significant part of their overall score.  Your students will be thoroughly prepared as they approach this event.

1. Your entire writing plan, from grades 3 through 12, is summarized.
On 6 pages, you will see your entire program laid out before you in fifteen steps.  Hang it near your desk or keep it handy as a quick reference.  If you see a lesson you like from your current language arts program, make a note on this summary so you’re sure to teach it at the appropriate time.  This summary will also tell you what resources to use.  It will recommend our curriculum or point you to your current language arts program.  Of course, we believe that our curriculum is the best.  However, if you like what you have, you are free to use it. Either way, you will know what to teach and how to teach it.

Sample page from the summary of the steps.  In six pages, you’ll see your entire plan from grades 3 through 12.

Sample page from the Pacing Chart. Start at anytime and be confident that you will cover all the major topics. Pacing charts for elementary, middle and high school students.
2. A Pacing Chart:
The second section offers three plans for pacing the fifteen steps of this writing plan.  If your child is ready to write a paragraph, he/she is ready to begin the program.  The first pacing guide is for elementary students.  This guide starts slowly and helps you give your student plenty of time to master each of the fifteen steps.

The next pacing guides show you how to pace the fifteen steps for your middle or high school students.  Because they are older, they can master the concepts more easily.  Just follow the pacing guide and your child will have a solid foundation in writing well before they graduate.

3. The Road Map:
Some steps in your writing program will require detailed lesson plans.  This is not the focus of the book.  This book’s focus is to act as your writing consultant.  The Road Map (Part III) will tell you what to look for in each step.  It will outline the requirements for each step to the extent that you will be able to do two things: 1. Write the lessons yourself or 2. Find the lessons within your current language arts curriculum.  Of course, this web site has each lesson plan you will need.  When you’re ready to teach one of the steps in the writing plan, come back here to find the high quality, low cost plans you need.

Sample page Part III shows lesson ideas, advice for teaching the step, and recommendations on curriculum for this step.  This book is your consultant for all things writing.

A wise saying states: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
The danger of pricing The Home School Writing Action Plan so low is that its power will be underestimated. Home school parents are used to paying top dollar for smaller programs.
How can a writing plan that all my children can use, that is easy to implement, and will send my children into their adult lives with incredible writing skills cost so little? The fact of the matter is that we’ve collected this information over the past twenty years. We’ve have experience teaching grades 3 through 12. Most importantly, we’ve been working with home school parents for more than a decade. This is the plan put together with the help of many people. It is effective, it is powerful, and we want you to have it at a price that is reasonable. This book is a treasure. We don’t want you to spend a treasure to have it.
